Ancient Wisdom

If loyalty is bought
For silver
If friendship is sold
For gold
The world would be a sad place
Ancients have foretold

If responsibilities are
Shifted to another
If all favours are
Tracked on a ledger
The world would be a sad place
Ancients have foretold

If love between two
Has to be curtailed by laws
If what we choose
Has to be okayed by gods
The world would be a sad place
Ancients "haven't"  foretold

But you and I have
Some sense and logic too
We have brains
To send man on moon
Can't we sense
When love is true
Can't we empathise
When men don't get their due

Can't we make laws
Which are fair
Can't we treat each other
With more care

Can't we weed out
Outdated laws
Can't we prune out
The illogical clause

Ancient wisdom is all fine
But a pinch of salt
Before we dine
Chew and swallow
what seems true
And spit out if it
Doesn't agree with you

Let's make the world
A happy and better place
Let's bank on ancient wisdom
But also on our intelligence
